Marc-Jacobs

Marc-Jacobs

I’ll be blunt: Marc Jacobs is New York Fashion Week. It’s the show that everyone wants to go to and no one can stop talking about, and it may have produced more activity from the people I follow on Twitter than the Super Bowl. In a way, I suppose, it’s sort of the same thing, just for a vastly different group of people.

Marc had another right-on-time start this year, causing latecomer and heavyweight André Leon Talley to stand (the horror) to watch the show. And what a show it was – the reaction so far has been practically rhapsodic – fashion editors everywhere are panting and drooling like mere commoners! And why wouldn’t they be? It’s Marc Freakin’ Jacobs.

This collection may not have been particularly “innovative,” but it’s just like Jacobs to decide that innovation is passé and that he’ll do what he pleases, regardless of the buzzwords overtaking the rest of fashion. There were retro references to his own classics like the grunge collection for Perry Ellis and various other items from fashion gone by, like Peter Pan collars, classic trench coats and long casual skirts.

The entire collection was rendered in a palette of subdued neutrals, featuring heavily shades of beige and grey. To remind us all that this was still extremely expensive clothing, there were plenty of lush materials like sequins, fur and velvet (which seems to be the fabric of the week). I’m not salivating quite as hungrily over the collection as many of my compatriots, but it’s hard to look at these clothes and not acknowledge that Marc Jacobs is an utterly masterful designer and creative thinker. Ok, I lied. I’m totally salivating, in particular over all the sparkly gunmetal pieces. I bet I didn’t have anyone fooled for a second.

Over on PurseBlog Savvy we continue to bring you handbags and accessories from contemporary designers that are almost always under $850. If you haven’t made PBs a daily read, you should! While we have separated categories, it is still nice to get a deal here on PurseBlog.

This week the Marc by Marc Jacobs Lace Miss Marc Circle Coin Purse has caught my attention for its cheeky design and affordable price. A couple months ago I would have told you, ‘hey, this is a great stocking stuffer!’. Now I am telling you, ‘hey, this is a great gift for any occasion’. Simply put, it is.

I adore this Marc by Marc Jacobs accessory! The print coated canvas features a lace Miss Marc graphic on the front. Miss Marc always has a way to provide us with a little sass, whether it is on a tee shirt, a bag, or an accessory. And this pouch is feminine, flirty and fun.

Help me out folks. Would you pay $1295 for this tote? I realize it is a Marc Jacobs design, but still, I really can’t get passed this price tag. This price has me shaking my head with each stroke on my keyboard.

Alright, enough of my disbelief and onto the bag itself. This Marc Jacobs Love Bird Leather Tote is a bright and cheery tote that will add quite a bit of color to just about any outfit you might want to pair it with.

Marc Jacobs has partnered fluorescent pink, fluorescent yellow and black on this hand-painted oversized leather tote. The two black leather top handles have the slightest hints of gold-tone stud detailing. I was really impressed with the gold-tone studs down each side of this large tote. It’s not often that you see bags with this kind of detailing, so I welcomed it with open arms.

This is the kind of bag I would love to use as my carry-on during travel days. I could fit everything in it, including my laptop and still look really fashionable. I have seen enough boring black carry-on bags at airports and the colors on this replica bag are enough to boost the spirits of those in just about any security line. The bag is finished off with a designer-stamped padlock which is a nice addition, but it doesn’t make or break the fashion bag.

Add this to the list of Things I Didn’t Know Science Cared About, I suppose.
According to UK retailer Debenhams, the weight of the average woman’s handbag, including its contents, has fallen from 7.69 pounds in 2007 to 3.31 pounds in 2009. I don’t know about anyone else, but my shoulders and back are certainly thankful for the dramatic change.
Everyone knows that no trend lasts forever, so when tiny actresses were seen with fashion handbags bigger than some New York studio apartments in the middle of the last decade, we all knew that it was a matter of time until the Olsen look was so five minutes ago. Well, if handbag weight is any indication, that time is now. But are there possible explanations other than just the normal ebb and flow of fashion trends?
UK rag Daily Mail thinks that there might be. They want to tie all of this into our gadgets – iPhones weigh less than the combination of an old school iPod and that Motorola flip phone that you had back in 2007, so I suppose that you might save a few ounces there, but I’m just not buying it as an overall explanation. It’s not like we were all carrying enormous Zack Morris phones back in ‘07, it was only two years ago.
And not only are traditional phones still more popular than smartphones, despite the fact that it seems like everyone you know has a Blackberry or iPhone, but the rest of the stuff that a woman usually carries is pretty static. As far as I know, no one has figured out a digital makeup app yet. Apple, get on that. The article also mentions laptops, but I don’t know many women that carry a computer in their everyday bag. And even if they did, I would imagine that any decrease in average laptop size between 2007 and 2009 would be offset by the likely increased number of women that now carry these ever lighter, slimmer devices that didn’t carry them at all two years ago.
So, as they say on one of my favorite shows, myth: busted. I’m not buying the explanation that the Daily Mail is selling. There’s an important one that they may have overlooked, however, and that’s the weight of the materials used. Maybe, just maybe, the manufacturers are listening to the practical complaints of their customers. That’s not common in fashion, but it might have happened with our replica handbags.

Yesterday, I walked into Neiman Marcus in Atlanta, picked up a Chloe hobo and for the first time, didn’t feel myself begin to tip over under the sheer weight of the empty bag. The size itself was still big – maybe even “oversized” would be the correct word – but it wasn’t heavy. It wasn’t even close. And when we live in a world where we can’t count on CHLOE, of all brands, to put out bags that are all so heavy that they make my arms fall asleep, what can we count on?

Handbag weight is one of the most common complaints that I hear from bag lovers, even to the point where some designers have changed their materials in very obvious ways. For instance, the first few iterations of the famous Marc Jacobs Stam were lined in suede. People complained, and every season since then has had a cotton or linen lining. When I pick up a Stam in a store now, it’s noticeably lighter than the early version that I bought back in 2006.
Those things considered, it’s likely that a combination of size trends, material changes and maybe a few technological advances have lead to such a precipitous drop in bag weight. Whatever it is, it’s better for bag lovers, any way you slice it.

I’m such a fan of Mr. Jacobs, but I hate to admit that this time around, he failed to impress.

With a name like the Beaded Daisy Shoulder Bag, it’s not as appealing as it sounds. I imagined some nice, complicated beading designs throughout a rich leather silhouette, but just take a look and you’ll see that it’s something totally different.

I’m a constant traveler to south of the border Mexico and this looks like something you could finding hanging off a rack at a tourist shop.

It’s just so busy it’s like carrying a ‘fiesta’ around with you, everywhere you go.

When you’ve simply ran out of ideas, it is necessary to bust out the scrap materials and start crafting?

Multicolored marble beads and thick Macramé textile knots are not my ideal look of upscale fashion, thank goodness the bundle of cord straps are detachable as the solid leather shoulder strap it arrives with looks much more appealing.

Although the Beaded Daisy won’t be making my wish list anytime soon, especially with the steep asking price of $1,995, I must say that I applaud Marc Jacobs on taking risks and creating very unique pieces. Although they’re not going to hit all the time, we just can’t help but wait to see what Mr. Marc will present to the fashion world next!

Actress Kirsten Dunst in Court Over Stolen Marc Jacobs Purse

Hollywood actress Kirsten Dunst has appeared in a New York court after her Marc Jacobs handbag was stolen. The starlet says a Manhattan mechanic stole her purse during a movie shoot at the SoHo Grand in August 2007.

“It was probably a $2, 000 purse,” she said of the brown Marc Jacobs handbag. “My purse had $2,000 in it, a pair of sunglasses, my wallet with all my credit cards.”
It’s alleged that 35-year-old James Jimenez slipped into the penthouse suite and stole Kirsten’s bag, a $13, 000 Balenciaga purse, and an iPod and camera belonging to her How to Lose Friends and Alienate People co-star Simon Pegg.

“It dawns on you slowly because, obviously, you don’t want to think that happened,” said British actor Simon Pegg.
Mr. Jimenez faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of burglary. An accomplice, Jarrod Beinerman, is currently serving four years after pleading guilty. Both men were spotted in the suite by a production assistant, and captured by hotel surveillance cameras.

Something tells me Mr. Jimenez will join his friend in the slammer pretty soon!

After a tripped-out fall/winter campaign earlier this year, Marc Jacobs has taken his namesake label to an equally offbeat yet somewhat surreal place for the upcoming spring/summer season.

American model-sometimes-singer Jamie Bochert stars in this first look from the campaign photographed by Marc Jacobs favored photographer Juergen Teller. Her unique look seems to fit beautifully with the often-quirky brand.

While at first glance the shot looks pretty and ethereal, mostly due to a gorgeous silk ruffled dress from the collection and the model’s dancer-like pose, the moment is quickly replaced with confusion when you realize that Bochert is standing in a toilet bowl. I’m not sure if there’s an intentional message here or just an abstract moment that’s merely meant to make you wonder.

Whatever the motivation, I’m definitely curious to see more from the campaign. Plus, in addition to the stunning gown, Jamie appears to be carrying the cute, new tasseled Peasant Pouch, which has me excited to see more replica handbags from this collection.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Totally Turnlock Bowler | Simple But Spacious Hold-all

marc-by-marc-jacobs-totally-turnlock-bowlerMarc Jacobs have gone for industrial functional looks with this simple leather bowler.

In saffron colored leather, this is a purse without any embellishments. Instead of fancy pockets or linings, Marc by Marc Jacobs has kept the focus on retro typeface decoration and high class materials.

This simple approach does make a specious bag. There are no pockets or anything to get in your way, meaning that this is perfect as a travel bag for a weekend away. The handles too seem to be designed to carry heavy weights, as they are far more useful than they are pretty!

All in all this is a useful yet unexciting bag. You are expected to pay $129.99 for this, yet get no luxuries - not even a lining. I’m not sure it’s worth it, but it will come in handy!

Marc Jacobs Vortex Small Tote

God bless Marc Jacobs and all of the fantastically odd handbag items that come out of his weird, wonderful head.

I wouldn’t carry the Marc Jacobs Vortex Small Tote even if it was free, but I think it’s great that someone designed and made it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: sometimes crazy stuff has to be made before a designer hits just the right now. This is not the right note – it’s the crazy stuff before it.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and this replica bag ventures a lot. In fact, it kind of looks like a really gussied-up gift bag. You know, the ones that take the place of wrapping paper for lazy people or those that give oddly shaped gifts. Except, of course, that’s it’s made of leather and (inexplicably) is covered with purple studs. Also, instead of tissue paper, there’s hot pink satin peaking out the top. Add in the blue velvet ribbons at the sides, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a confused luxurious handbag with no obvious focus. And that’s fantastic – I’d rather see a designer take a million weird chances than turn out the same safe bag for decades on end.

Marc Jacobs Handbags from Fashion Week Runway

marc-jacobs-runway-bagThe Purse Blog has compiled some fabulous pictures of the new Marc Jacobs bags seen on the runway at Fashion Week. Though the models and the clothes usually get the most attention, this new handbag collection has a personality that stands out on its own.

Without a doubt, the quirky designer handbags put his individual stamp on these new purses. Although some have likened Marc Jacobs’ use of quilted bags to Chanel’s handbag signature look, I personally don’t see any resemblance to the ultra formal and uptown look of Chanel.

This bags collection puts a new spin on the quilted look as well as other materials. The pieces have a funky 80s vibe with big, showy details and lots of texture.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Marc Jacobs bags and always look forward to his next collection of bags. These might be too showy for some, but surely other faithful followers of the designer are as pleased as I am with this new look.
