Founded in 1845, A.Lange & Sohne can most certainly be reviewed as one of those brands whose vision and dedication to watch manufacturing has brought it in the center of attention of the watch manufacturing tradition. Always employing the best materials and always creating progressive mechanisms, A.Lange & Sohne will definitely remain amongst the best watch making brands of the future years as well and will surely introduce some more landmark timepieces. Founded by F.A. Lange, the A.Lange & Sohne brand continues to honor its founding father by releasing editions of watches in his memoir and by keeping the fire burning for this passion of Haute Horology.
The Richard Lange Collection has been extended with the release of the latest A.Lange & Sohne Richard Lange „Referenzuhr“Watch, dedicated to Richard Lange( 1845 – 1932), the son of A.F. Lange who took over the business after his father death, with his brother. The refined watch reminds the watch connoisseurs of the quality of the past and of the prestige of such a long-lasting brand that even nowadays is seen as one of the most progressive brands in watch manufacturing.
The case of the new A.Lange & Sohne Richard Lange „Referenzuhr“ Watch measures 40.5 mm in diameter, being roundly shaped and crafted from pink gold. The fact that this brand opts more for materials such as gold or silver as opposed to stainless steel has come to be regarded distinctive from the other brands, highlighting one more time A.Lange & Sohne’s commitment to quality. The case comes equipped with a 3 o’clock positioned crown, followed by a pusher located at 2 o’clock that offers the possibility to restart from zero the small seconds.
The silvery dial provides a touch of elegance to the watch’s design and it’s accentuated by the black Roman numerals applied as hour markers and the gold central hands indicating the hours and the minutes. The small seconds function is shown through a sub-dial with blue steeled hands.
The new A.Lange & Sohne Richard Lange „Referenzuhr“ Watch makes use of a highly complicated technical movement defined as the manually wound Calibre L033.1. This mechanism is extremely efficient as it comes equipped with the patented function of stop-seconds and can offer 38 hours of power reserve. Rising to the reputation of its brand, the new A.Lange & Sohne Richard Lange „Referenzuhr“ Watch sure brings a breeze of fresh air to the market of watch manufacturing, by making room not only to sporty pieces, but also to those characterized by classiness and quality
Originally founded in 1845, then destroyed by Russian bombers during World War II in 1945, it wasn’t until the reunification of East and West Germany in 1989 that Walter Lange once again established A. Lange & Sohne. Then, in 1994, the world was introduced to Lange’s first new collection of mechanical watches.
Now only ten years later, this true manufacturer, employs 260 craftsmen in its Glashutte workshops, creating its own movements and assembling by hand just only a few thousand watches a year.
Several important features mark all Lange watches-platinum or 18-karat gold cases, screw-on case backs, sapphire crystals, and sealed push pieces. Technically, the watches are distinctly complicated with offerings including off center main dial (Lange 1 and Lange 1 Tourbillon), split-seconds chronograph (Datograph), over-sized date display (Lange Saxonia), and perpetual calendar features (Langematik Perpetual).
In April 2004, a sensational event took place at the Watch Salon in Geneva. The A. Lange & Sohne, made a presentation of the Lange Double Split, the world’s first wristwatch with the twin counters of the split chronograph, a real watch within a watch. The split chronograph, or rattrapante mechanism, was invented Louis-Frederick Perelle in 1827. It made it possible to measure the time taken by two objects separately. But A. Lange & Sohne’s model is even cleverer. The Lange Double Split’s 43mm platinum case contains two counters √ a main and a secondary. An additional minute-counter makes it possible to measure an event lasting up to 30 minutes √ the majority of ordinary chronographs can only measure up to 60 seconds. This function provides the closest possible comparison, which is important for those involved in horse or motor racing. A ‘chronograph within a chronograph’ of this kind has been dreamed about by watchmakers almost since the time of Perelle. For this reason, the brainchild of the German engineers immediately became the brightest star in the chronograph horizon, and its creators won the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve, while the devotees of state-of-the-art watch-making obtained a new fetish.
Its manual and automatic movements are frequent award-winners and each is made in-house and used exclusively for its own watches.

Here is something you don’t see everyday. The Toubrograph “Pour le Merite” by Saxony’s A. Lange & Sohne was the second watch by the high-class watch maker to bear the “Pour le Merite” badge. The available model is of the rarest, in platinum, with just 51 pieces made. The watch was released in 2005 with an incredible reception. Despite the fact that A. Lange & Sohne watches are often very similar in character, it is the small differences that each new model bears that are intriguing. The watch company defines conservation, when it comes to keeping high-end watch making a purists’ art form.
The Tourbograph “Pour le Merite” features a world’s first combination of desirable complications. It had a one minute tourbillon, a fusee and chain escapement, and a rattrapante chronograph, along with a power reserve indicator. All in a very simple looking, but mechanically complex package. The watch itself has over 1000 parts inside, each carefully finished by hand. The split second or ‘rattrapante’ chronograph is a 30 minute counter that can split between two time. That is why the watch has two chronograph seconds hands. Manufacturing, decorating, constructing, and testing of each tourbograph “Pour le Merite” watches takes well over a year. So even though the limited edition was release in 2005, Lange is still likely making them today, even with such a limited run.
Despite the ultra luxury status of the watch, when you handle it, you don’t immediately think “I should really be careful with this.” It doesn’t come across as delicate, but rather as a very well put together watch utterly capable of being worn and relied upon daily. Given its value, and the fact this this is what I call an “investment grade” watch, I wouldn’t recommend wearing it so often though. Right now, one of these very rare A. Lange & Sohne Tourbograph “Pour le Merite” watches is available on JamesList. Price? Well it is high, very high, but this is the type of watch that can command such a value. Like I said, they are investment grade watches meaning that they are among the few watches in the world with the ability to appreciate in price.
